The China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS) and Shanghai University of Chinese Traditional Medicine (SHUTCM) have cooperated to promote a pilot project for training high-level traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) talents.

The project involves a specialized TCM class named after Chinese Nobel laureate Tu Youyou for nine-year integrated education that leads to a doctorate.

According to an official release, the class will begin to recruit students this year. It plans to enroll 15 students, three from each of Beijing and Shandong, Shanxi, Henan and Zhejiang provinces.

The SHUTCM and the CACMS will be in charge of the teaching, training and management work of these students during undergraduate and postgraduate periods respectively. They will build a joint working team to carry out a series of teaching reforms, including curriculum development, textbook compilation and implementation of innovation and entrepreneurship projects.

The undergraduate training program aims to optimize the traditional curriculum, open courses of new cross-disciplines, and customize study plan for each student.

The program will also provide students with opportunities to be trained in the domestic top research platforms or foreign cutting-edge laboratories and be guided by domestic top-level experts and research platforms to improve personal innovation ability.

The CACMS and the SHUTCM organized a feasibility study meeting on the Tu Youyou Class Training Scheme on July 15. In the next stage, they will conduct in-depth exchanges on the implementation of the scheme, the selection of tutors and the establishment of the working mechanisms and the joint college.

Tu Youyou, a Chinese pharmaceutical chemist and malaria specialist, is China's first female Nobel laureate, and has been widely lauded for her development of the pioneering anti-malaria drug artemisinin, which has helped save countless lives around the world. She serves as the chief lifetime researcher of the CACMS, and has been engaged in research on TCM and integrated Chinese and western medicine for many years.

The CACMS, founded in 1955, is a national comprehensive institution for scientific research, clinical medicine and medical education on TCM. At present, it is the largest research organization on TCM throughout the country.

Founded in 1956, the SHUTCM is one of the first four TCM higher education institutions since the founding of the People's Republic of China.
